Location information for Scotland

Although Scotland is a relatively small country, there is an incredible amount of things to see and do here. The landscape is varied with some amazing highlands, impressive coastline and picturesque rolling green hills. To really see the most of Scotland it is best to hire a car and self-drive.

Scotland offers its visitors a wide variety of things to do; historians will love the 1,000-year-old historic sites and museums while outdoorsmen will relish the incredible mountains and coastal treks and young people can enjoy the nightlife in the cosmopolitan cities. There is truly something for everyone.

The capital city, Edinburgh, is conveniently located on the east coast, only 60 miles from the English border. The city has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage site because of the abundance of historic sites such as the impressive 12th century Edinburgh Castle and St Giles Cathedral. Edinburgh also boasts a wide range of modern shopping, world-class restaurants and fantastic pubs and clubs.

Positioned along the east coast of Scotland and easily reached by cheap car hire in Scotland are numerous cities including the famous St Andrews. St Andrews is not only home to one of the world's oldest golf courses but is where you can find St Andrews Castle and St Andrews Cathedral, which were both built around the 12th century.

The best way to see the eastern coast is by car rental in Scotland - slowly make your way through the small villages, stopping off to see attractions and the traditional Scottish countryside. Heading north, Aberdeen and Peterhead are both worth checking out.
