General Motor’s considers cheap car option

Monday, August 24th, 2009

The former leading car manufacturer is being forced to change the way it functions in order to stay in the black. In June of this year the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It seems that GM is now thinking about producing a low cost car in Asia to reduce labour costs.

There are plans in place to produce a car which would retail at around $4,000 – £2,400 – which would put it in the same low-price group as India’s Tata Motors $2,500 Nano model.

The new project is the brainchild of Nick Reilly, who is General Motors’ executive vice president of international operations. Reilly was recently promoted and has wasted no time in making his voice heard.

In a recent interview, Reilly explained the genius behind the new plan:  “When Tata Motors in India came out with their $2,500 Nano vehicle it put a lot of auto makers on the spot.” He went on to explain that GM is currently: “looking at lower-cost vehicles, but do not know yet where it will be made or where will it be sold, though most likely in Asia.”

Land Rover top the car hire charts

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Two prominent vehicles on the British roads, the Land Rover Freelander 2 and Discovery 3 sports utility vehicle, proved once again this week why they are popular choices among those who love to hire cars. Each of these magnificent vehicles scored well with judges at the prestigious Auto Express 2009 New Car Awards and won awards.

The Freelander 2 was awarded the Best Compact SUV trophy, beating the Audi Q5 and the Ford Kuga. At the same time, the Discovery 3 managed to beat the BMW X6 to be named the Best Large SUV.

As Auto Express motoring and digital editor Daniel Strong said in a recent interview: “When it comes to off-road credentials, few firms can match the history and experience of one of Britain’s best loved motoring brands. A host of new metal has arrived in the past 12 months with the aim of knocking the Freelander 2 off the top of the off-road summit, but the Land Rover’s depth of talent has seen it retain its title as the best compact SUV.”

The Discovery 3 scored highly for its versatile design, allowing it to perform excellently both on and off-road.
