Thrifty employees opt for bikes over cars

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Thrifty car hire near Tower Bridge in London has come up with a novel way in which employees can complete their journeys once they have collected or dropped off a rental vehicle with a customer. Instead of getting behind the wheel of another car, employees have found it more convenient to jump in a hire bike.

Opposite the Thrifty branch is a docking station for bikes rented out under the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme. Run by Transport for London, and otherwise known as Boris Bikes, customers are able to collect a bicycle from numerous points around the capital, use it to complete their journey and then drop that bike off at another conveniently located terminal.

Cyclists are only required to pay for the time they are actually using the bike. Thrifty is already seeing the benefits of employees choosing two wheels over four. There is now less to pay in congestion charges and at a time when the price of petrol and diesel is particularly high, the firm is making savings on fuel.

Taking advantage of the initiative is also a benefit to the environment. According to Thrifty’s Tower Bridge location manager, Francis Limbambala, none of the team has been forced to use the bikes. However, after deciding to test them out everyone agreed that they were far greener, far more efficient, and far quicker than utilising another petrol driven vehicle. The Thrifty team has also apparently found it a good way to get fitter.

The firm has invested in helmets, visibility vests and trouser-clips for the safety of its employees.

Car hire manager to serve prison time

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

The manager of a car hire firm at Hobart Airport in Risdon Vale has been sentenced to two years in prison after he was found guilty of thieving from his employer. Dan John Pitt, 30, was working for Thrifty car rental when he stole over $52,000 between November 2008 and September 2009 in order to pay for his drug habit.

Mr Pitt would steal anything from $300 to $3,000 every few days, and deposit the funds into his account using EFTPOS electronic banking. His employers at Thrifty eventually caught on to the scheme and notified the authorities, leading to his arrest and ultimate conviction.

Police records report that Mr Pitt is no stranger to thievery, as he was convicted of a similar offence in 2004 when he was living in Queensland. In an attempt to rationalise Mr Pitt’s behaviour, his attorney argued before the court that he had needed to use drugs in order to deal with childhood memories of sexual abuse, which had resurfaced after he was the victim of a violent escapade during his previous prison stay.

Justice Shan Tennent presided over the case, and during his reading of the verdict, said that regardless of the reasons for his thievery, he could not dismiss the fact that Mr Pitt was a repeat offender. Justice Tennent went on to add that he was less likely to be lenient since Mr Pitt did not stop on his own volition, and would have kept stealing money if he had not been caught.

Car rental in Australia can be a little bit different

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Hiring a car rental on the Australian continent is often a bit different to car hire in other countries because of Australia’s sheer size. A common method of rental is to pick up a car in one location and then to drive it to another location, sometimes in a different state, for the drop off. Because the car is not being taken back to the place where it was hired it means that many companies will add on an extra charge for the relocation of the vehicle to its original office.

One-way car rental is not unusual but it is always a good idea to invest a bit of time comparing the hire costs of different car hire companies before deciding on what deal to go for. Large companies like Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty all offer competitive deals but it is worth taking note of any additional mileage costs and relocation charges.

With many young people now taking advantage of car rentals to get around Australia it is also worth checking how much additional insurance may be required for car rental to people in their early 20s. If you are in the 21 to 24 year-old age group then some companies may add an additional surcharge and limit the size of the car they are prepared to rent out.

As always if you are planning to hire a vehicle to get around Australia it is worth planning the trip as far in advance as possible in order take advantage of special deals and lower prices.

Thrifty Car Rental expands its Moroccan network

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Thrifty Car Rental has made a deal with the Moroccan airports authority to open shops in Tangier, Rabat, Marrakech and Agadir. The agreement comes a year after Thrifty opened in Casablanca and is part of a move to provide better car rental service to a broad range of clients across the corporate, business and leisure sectors. The car hire firm aims to attract more customers from both the Middle East and Europe.

Morocco as a whole has weathered the recent global financial difficulties well, according to the International Monetary Fund, and has managed to grow its economy over recent years because of trade reforms.

Abdel Hamid Hdoud, Managing Director of Thrifty Car Rental Morocco says that the company has recognized that there is a market for quality car hire in Morocco and this has been proven by the company’s success in Casablanca. Thrifty will now grow its fleet by thirty-five percent across a range of vehicles from the small cars — which are currently very popular with customers — through to larger luxury vehicles and on to four-wheel drive SUVs and mini-vans.

Executive Director, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, MENA and Asia Pacific, Sam Eltibi has said that the company has been able to expand rapidly within Morocco because of how well the country has coped with the global economic downturn. It has also been given the opportunity to actively take advantage of the rise in tourists and business people coming to the country whilst still providing the service expected to existing clients.
