BMW expands car share scheme

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

BMW has announced plans to introduce its car sharing programme to major cities across Europe. Currently the scheme is being run in Munich in partnership with car rental company Sixt. BMW has spread 300 1-Series models throughout the German city which can be hired by members of the scheme for around 25 pence per minute.

Those who register for the initiative with BMW dealers are able to use an application on their mobile phone to locate the nearest available vehicle. Once in the car, a PIN is entered and the car is activated. Payment for the journey is then taken from the driver’s credit card. Refuelling teams ensure that the cars always have a full tank and satellites track the cars’ positions.

Sales and marketing boss for BMW’s mobility services in Munich, Tony Douglas, said the success of the scheme meant that BMW and Sixt were looking to expand to Berlin. He added that BMW provided the cars and Sixt was in charge of running the customer database and logistics.

Among the other cities which could soon see the car sharing scheme are London, Birmingham and Manchester, according to Douglas. The car-maker has a £62 million fund for expanding its mobility services. As well as the car-sharing scheme, BMW has invested in My City Way based in New York.

Among the services offered is advice on the best route to take through the city. The scheme is due to come to London and will offer similar services under the title My London Way.

Sixt sorts car rental problems out online

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Car hire company Sixt is tuning into the popularity of online social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook as a way of modernizing its customer service.

A team of dedicated employees will now monitor a number of websites so that they will be able to react to any problems customers may be encountering as quickly as possible. These sites will include blogs, forums, debating sites and the ever popular social networking sites.

Managing director of Sixt, Ian Lawrence says that the move is all part of improving customer service which has always been the company’s first priority. The service is aimed at getting speedier reactions to customers who have issues or queries. The new system will mean that customers can get in contact with Sixt and get a reaction without having to resort to more formal measures such as writing letters or calling customer service telephone numbers. These traditional measures of complaining can take up time and energy when a customer already feels that he has wasted enough time and energy dealing with poor service in the first place.

The company claims that they are now clearing the problems clients might have in record time. They also say that many people have contacted them through the new system to send them praise. Ian Lawrence also points out that by communicating with customers in the public domain they have been able to build up more trust and prevent problems from getting out of hand.

Sixt Rent a Car reports decent second quarter

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Sixt car rental is starting to see some improvement in rental car demand and their second quarter earnings were better than the first quarter.  Part of the improvement was due to cost cutting measures, reduced fleet, and a change in the way they do their financing.

According to Erich Sixt, head of the rental car giant, “Sixt has successfully adapted to the change in the market environment. The second quarter has shown that our cost-cutting and efficiency-enhancing measures are starting to take effect. A cautious fleet policy, price increases, customer-focused product innovations and cost awareness are the key factors for continued success in this environment.”

Revenues for the company were up a whopping 7.8% over the first quarter. This is a good sign for the car rental business faced with the worst economic climate of its existence. Their EBT for the second quarter was €22.4 million. If you disregard the fleet size reduction and the financing switch then the numbers go down to €13.9 million, but it’s still a big improvement over the first three months of the year.

Even though this very positive for Sixt, like other rental car companies, the figures were still down from last year. Total revenue industry wide is way down when compared to last year at this time.

Sixt expands rental car outlets in train stations

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

In a further effort to provide seamless connections from rail to rental car, Sixt is opening two new rental counters right inside of train stations. The new outlets are located at Maastrict Central Station and Brussels South.

Sixt has been increasing their visibility at train stations during the past year with rental outlets at Rotterdam Central, St.Pieters, Utrecht Central, and Amsterdam stations. The outlet at Amsterdam Central is one of the busiest in the Benelux.

“Despite the current tight market, we are showing courage by investing in new rental outlets. The previous opening of the Sixt branch at Amsterdam Central Station proved to be an enormous success, a trend which we of course expect to continue with the opening of Sixt at Maastricht Central Station and certainly so with the rental outlet at the junction of international train services, the Brussels South railway station,” said Thomas Wolters of Sixt.

According to Wolters, convenience of location is a critical factor in a customer’s decision making process. Sixt wants to make it as easy as possible for train passengers traveling between England, France, the Netherlands, and Germany to find a rental car. Eurostar, Thalys, and ICE International passengers will have no problem finding a Sixt outlet.

Sixt has more than 150 rental counters in the UK and boasts a fleet of 26,000 rental cars.
