Qantas waits patiently for spring to arrive

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

While a number of airlines and travel companies have recently announced that they are starting to see a reversal in their fortunes as revenues start to rise once more after a lean few months, the same cannot be said for all companies.

This week Qantas released its annual report in which the airline revealed that it was uncertain whether or not it would ever be able to recover from the massive slump in air travel. The chairman of Qantas admitted in the report that the global economic outlook remains uncertain and the company is still waiting to see any substantial improvement in the underlying business conditions. However, Qantas still remain optimistic that the sun will soon shine on their business, and that the seeds they have so busily been sowing in establishing new flight programmes, deals and offers may soon start to sprout.

However, the report also indicated that although times are still tough for Qantas at thje moment they have what it takes to weather the storm and will be ready and waiting when things take a turn for the better.

Still, the airline has a lot of ground to make up as they posted back in August that they had suffered an 88% fall in their full-year net profit, taking them down to $117 million

Qantas adds destinations to frequent flyer programme

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Leading airline Qantas has just announced that it is adding 100 new destinations to its frequent flyer programme, meaning that those who take to the skies on a regular basis will have plenty of places to spend their air miles.

In addition, travellers can now use their points on Qantas or Jetstar services and then fly onwards with partner airlines to other destinations that are not covered by either of the two.

In a recent interview Qantas Frequent Flyer CEO Simon Hickey explained the details of the new and improved offer: “This enhancement means greater choice and flexibility for our members, it opens up an extensive range of new travel options and provides members with the opportunity to travel on Qantas and other selected airlines, entirely on points. For example, a member wanting to travel from Australia to Europe can book a Qantas Any Seat Award to fly Qantas to London and then continue onto Milan, Prague, St Petersburg or Dublin on another airline as part of the same booking, using their Qantas Frequent Flyer points for the full journey.”

Members who book through the main Qantas.com website will also be presented with an additional option to use points or the ‘Points Plus Pay’ system.

Qantas passenger tries to take the plunge

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Although most people who take to the skies are perfectly happy to stay within the plane, this week staff aboard Qantas flight QF2 flight from London via Bangkok were forced to restrain one passenger, who tried to open the emergency door midflight.

The plane had already started its descent into Sydney airport, but it seems that one passenger just couldn’t wait and tried to make a break for the outside world ahead of schedule.

In a recent interview a fellow passenger described the situation in detail: “The man, who was a big guy, stood up again and made a move for the middle door in the economy section. He grabbed the handle but Qantas staff were able to restrain him. The incident wasn’t in any way threatening, but some children did become scared and upset, and started yelling.”

Although Qantas have yet to make an official statement regarding the incident, they have denied that the man actually handled the cabin door. However, they did admit to having to restrain the disruptive passenger, who was later taken for questioning by airport security.

Qantas still going strong after 50 years

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Prominent airline Qantas have a lot to celebrate this week as this is the 50th year since the launch of their successful first jet service from the USA to Australia.

To commemorate the occasion, a ‘gate lounge party’ was held at Sydney International Airport earlier this week. Passengers on the Qantas QF73 flight to San Francisco were greeted with a brass band, waiters carrying plates of cupcakes and big smiles all round.

Alan Joyce is the CEO of Qantas. In a recent interview he talked about the secret of Qantas’ success: “The move to jets… was such a big step change in the evolution of aviation history.  It was a bit like going from black and white to colour. We’re there to stay, we’re not going to go anywhere… historically we’re the only ones who have had longevity on this route. We’ve had Northwest and Continental on the route in the past, the route has gone from profits to losses… I’m sure last time Northwest and Continental were on the route they were saying that they were going to stick to it as well. We’re getting the lowest airfares that we’ve ever seen [to the USA]… but we can see that people are losing money.”

Despite drops in the number of air passengers over the last year, Qantas remains strong, and it seems that their future is bright.

The Qantas Airways plane was en-route to Perth in Australia from Hong Kong when it ran into bad turbulence over Borneo Malaysia. Passengers on the long haul flight described the panic as it struck when lights went out and people not wearing their seatbelts had been thrown around the cabin.

“It appeared like we’d just dropped out of a 30-storey building,” said a passenger, Keith Huxtable. Another traveller on the plane, Michelle Knight said that cabin crew had told her the plane had dropped about 100feet. (more…)
