Premier Inn offers budget honeymoon package for £58

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Cash strapped newlyweds can now afford a honeymoon get-a-way thanks to a promotion recently launched by Premier Inn. For just £58 a couple can enjoy a stay in a variety of locations serviced by the hotel chain. Waterloo, Belfast, and Hull are among the romantic venues being offered.

The average honeymoon these days costs in excess of £3000 so this new deal from Premier offers a huge savings to couple who are pinching pennies. The £58 price tag gets you two nights stay at the hotel plus breakfast and dinner.

Premier goes a step further and sets the mood by scattering rose petals on the bed. They even throw in a bottle of wine from Asda, chocolates, and strawberries to boot. Honeymooners are also provided with a complimentary Boots spa hamper and pajamas by Primark.

“We spent around £15,000 on a beautiful wedding day for our friends and family but it left us with no time or money to enjoy a break for ourselves. We’re looking forward to having a belated honeymoon, said Gemma and Chris Brooks, a newlywed couple from South London who plan to take advantage of the offer.

Nine separate Premier locations are currently offering the deal which is good through the end of September.

Five-star hotel offers free rooms to artists

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Kunst-Werke Institute of Contemporary Art in cooperation with the posh Hotel Marienbad in Berlin is offering artists a free room in exchange for a contribution of artwork to the hotel.

The offer has attracted a variety of painters and sculptors from around the world who stay at the hotel while they complete their art projects.  The hotel accepts a wide variety of artwork into its collection. Besides paintings and sculptures, Marienbad has accepted poetry readings, film screenings, and even a concert.

“As long as they come from outside Berlin and need a bed for the night, everyone is welcome, though we’ve got such a long waiting list that we are very careful about picking and choosing our guests,” said Susanne Pfeffer, one of the organizers and curator of the Institute.

Galsgow artist and winner of the prestigious Turner Prize, Douglas Gordon was the first artist to take advantage of the hotel’s offer by designing a sign made of red neon that hangs on the front of the building.

Two people from Städelschule art school brought in over 400 student paintings and set up a public display in one of the guest rooms.

One of the more unusual works of art is currently on display in one of the rooms and consists of what appears to be a stuffed horse’s head mounted on the wall above the bed.

Artists are encouraged to apply by contacting the Berlin Hotel Marienbad in Auguststrasse.

Room rates decline in world’s most expensive city

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Even though the average price of its hotel rooms has fallen by £45, Moscow took the honors of being the most expensive city in the world for business travelers in a recent poll by Hogg Robinson Group. Moscow beat out Abu Dhabi, who came in second, by £15 per room.

Milan, who came in fifth, was the only other city besides Moscow in the top ten where the average room rate fell. Milan’s hotel rooms are about £5 cheaper this year than last.

Abu Dhabi may well make its way to the top spot it the next survey when Hogg Robinson conducts it again in six months if its rates continue to increase. Abu Dhabi’s rates went up by 38% which was more than any other country in the survey. Demand for rooms in the United Arab Emirates far outstrips demand.

Paris, New York, Rome and Hong Kong all showed increased room rates. Even though eight of the top ten most expensive cities showed increased rates, the overall picture was one of declining rates worldwide.

According to Margaret Bowler of HRG, “The latest figures suggest that the industry has some way to go before rates stabilize. With all key global cities recording rate declines in both quarters, London was the only city where decline slowed marginally.”

The average price of a room in London dropped by about £5.

Park Plaza Hotel to open in London

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Despite a huge drop in tourism, the new Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel is still scheduled to open. The huge opulent hotel has 1,021 rooms and is the largest hotel in London.

The 15-story £350 million hotel is still under construction. The topping-out ceremony is to take place tomorrow night with Mayor Boris Johnson presiding. Construction of the hotel has transformed a blighted area into a London showcase. When it opens, the hotel will have a four-star rating.

There has been much skepticism leveled at the decision to build such an ambitious project in the midst of the worst recession in decades. Tourism in London has tanked in recent months with no sign of a recovery anytime soon. London at present has a glut of empty hotel rooms.

One highly visible casualty of the recession was the Real Hotel Company that had to go into administration because of financial difficulties last year. Real Hotel saw their business drop dramatically due to cancellations of large corporate events.

Officials at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge remain undaunted. The project has been fully funded since its inception and, to date, hasn’t experienced any cuts.

“People might think we are mad to be doing this but in fact we are investing for the future. We have a fabulous location and our prices will be very reasonable”, said general manager, Andrew Swindells.

When it opens the hotel will feature spectacular views of London from its upper floors and terrace. Besides top end penthouse rooms, it will also offer 540 studio rooms reasonably priced at £140 per night targeting families.
