Heathrow’s figures on the rise

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Staff at Heathrow airport may soon be popping the champagne as for the third month in a row the number of passengers has risen, making last month the third-busiest month of traffic on record in July.

The number of late bookings increased dramatically last month, as more than six million passengers passed through the airport, which was an increase of 0.9% compared to July 2008. Last month was the airport’s busiest month since July 2006, with a 5.5% increase in long-haul flights, with the average number of passengers per aircraft up to a record number of 162.

This is quite a contrast to the figures for the UK’s other airports. Examples of this can be seen at nearby Gatwick, where the traffic volume fell by 4.8 percent, while it feel by 12.9 percent at Glasgow and 5.7 percent at Stansted.

As a spokesman for BAA said in a recent interview: “Heathrow’s traffic has been gradually stabilising since last year. If you look at the trend, it’s not a huge surprise.”

However, most of the airlines operating out of Heathrow airport are still offering low tickets rates and great deals to entice customers, making this the ideal time to take to the skies.

Britons willing to camp out for bargain flights

Friday, August 7th, 2009

It seems that some people are willing to go to great lengths at the moment to save money on flight tickets. When STA travel agents announced that they would be issuing £10 tickets to Australia starting from 8am Wednesday at eight branches across Britain, people camped outside the travel agents for up to 72 hours in advance.

The first people in the queue were friends Rosie Emeny and Ashleigh McPherson, both of who are 22-years-old. In an interview with The Telegraph Rose Emeny said that: “We got here on Sunday and by Wednesday morning will have been here three nights. We have been quite lucky with the weather and we are absolutely loving being first in the queue. The tickets will be saving us about £600 – this was too good an opportunity to give up. I wanted to go to Australia anyway and we heard about this at around the same time. Anyone who thinks we are mad for camping out is just jealous! I’m planning to just travel and we have got a year’s visa so I’ll definitely be out there until then.”

The promotion is being held to celebrate STA’s 30th anniversary. Anyone aged between 18 and 30 with a 12-month working holiday visa for Australia can still pick up these terrific £10 tickets.

Holidaymakers travel light this summer

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

How far would you go to save a few quid? It seems when it comes to air travel, the sky is the limit.

According to a new survey by travelsupermarket, travellers are determined to avoid paying for excess baggage and go to great lengths to ensure they don’t have to. These measures include wearing heavy clothing while flying, wearing heavy shoes and leaving items behind. In fact, the survey revealed that more than have the respondents are saving money by packing fewer clothes and buying toiletries at their destination.

Bob Atkinson, is one of the research team responsible for putting the survey together. In a recent interview he stated that: “I can’t stress enough how important it is for travellers to weigh their hold and hand luggage before they turn up at the airport to avoid a confrontation at the check-in desk or gate. Many airlines have become much stricter about checking in overweight baggage, particularly in light of rising fuel costs. And many more are weighing hand luggage to ensure that people are complying with the rules they impose.”

So whether you plan to pack everything but the kitchen sink or like to travel light, make sure you weigh your bag carefully at home before leaving.

Qantas still going strong after 50 years

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Prominent airline Qantas have a lot to celebrate this week as this is the 50th year since the launch of their successful first jet service from the USA to Australia.

To commemorate the occasion, a ‘gate lounge party’ was held at Sydney International Airport earlier this week. Passengers on the Qantas QF73 flight to San Francisco were greeted with a brass band, waiters carrying plates of cupcakes and big smiles all round.

Alan Joyce is the CEO of Qantas. In a recent interview he talked about the secret of Qantas’ success: “The move to jets… was such a big step change in the evolution of aviation history.  It was a bit like going from black and white to colour. We’re there to stay, we’re not going to go anywhere… historically we’re the only ones who have had longevity on this route. We’ve had Northwest and Continental on the route in the past, the route has gone from profits to losses… I’m sure last time Northwest and Continental were on the route they were saying that they were going to stick to it as well. We’re getting the lowest airfares that we’ve ever seen [to the USA]… but we can see that people are losing money.”

Despite drops in the number of air passengers over the last year, Qantas remains strong, and it seems that their future is bright.

Aussie tourism aimed at the young

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Acting on a recent brainwave, the tourist board in New South Wales is setting its sights on those aged between 18 and 30 who want to visit Australia in order to travel, work and study.

The new marketing promotion, which is part of the Global Youth Program in UK, is making efforts to contact young overseas travelers through social platforms such as MySpace, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. The Seven Days in Sydney campaign will be published on networks throughout the UK and Ireland to present the weeklong travel experience of a pair of young travellers who will be randomly selected to visit Sydney and report back through online media.

Jodi McKay is the New South Wales Minister for Tourism. In a recent press statement she announced that: “Two young travellers will come to Sydney for a fun-packed seven day itinerary and report online about their experience. Between them they will compile up to 40 video diaries, 350 photos, 70 blogs and 280 tweets, with their content to be published on a variety of online networks including Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter and Sydney.com.”

Anyone who has dreamed about their 15 minutes of fame may soon have their dreams come true. However, the NSW tourist board has yet to select anyone.

A report out recently by Which? Holiday a consumer magazine has revealed that four airlines are not following an EU ruling made last November that clearly states that airlines can no longer add extras on automatically for things like insurance.
