Rental car toll cuts hire costs

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

In a new bid to make car hire easier for visitors to New South Wales in Australia, the Minister for Roads has got together with a number of car hire companies to launch a new tolling system.

Michael Daley, the Minster for Roads in New South Wales, is making plans in conjunction with leading car hire companies such as AVIS Australia and Budget Rent-A-Car. In a recent interview Mr Daley revealed that the plans would involve 735 rental cars in the region of Sydney and Newcastle.

“This trial has the potential to save our international, interstate and regional visitors confusion, time and money.” Mr Daley said in a recent interview. “While we expect rental car companies to show restraint and charge a fair amount to cover the costs of recovering tolls from their customers, we know this is not always the case. It is currently the practice of some rental car companies to charge an administration fee of up to $35 to identify the driver and pass on any correspondence. This trial is about giving our visitors a cost-effective and convenient way to use Sydney’s motorways without being slugged by unfair administration fees.”

The beauty of the trial, which will be put into effect at selected Avis Australia and Budget Rent-A-Car outlets in the Sydney CBD, Kings Cross and Newcastle, means that the true cost  Of car hire will be clear from the very start.

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Amid reports of car shortages in Australia, forward thinking car hire company, Europcar has announced that it has increased its fleet by adding more medium-size cars from Hyundai. Hertz and Avis were recently caught unprepared as demand soared in some areas of the country.

Aussie tourism aimed at the young

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Acting on a recent brainwave, the tourist board in New South Wales is setting its sights on those aged between 18 and 30 who want to visit Australia in order to travel, work and study.

The new marketing promotion, which is part of the Global Youth Program in UK, is making efforts to contact young overseas travelers through social platforms such as MySpace, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. The Seven Days in Sydney campaign will be published on networks throughout the UK and Ireland to present the weeklong travel experience of a pair of young travellers who will be randomly selected to visit Sydney and report back through online media.

Jodi McKay is the New South Wales Minister for Tourism. In a recent press statement she announced that: “Two young travellers will come to Sydney for a fun-packed seven day itinerary and report online about their experience. Between them they will compile up to 40 video diaries, 350 photos, 70 blogs and 280 tweets, with their content to be published on a variety of online networks including Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter and Sydney.com.”

Anyone who has dreamed about their 15 minutes of fame may soon have their dreams come true. However, the NSW tourist board has yet to select anyone.

Australia has rental car shortage

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Australia is experiencing a severe shortage of rental cars especially in the northern Queensland area around the city of Cairns. The shortage is the result of several factors that have combined to make a “perfect storm” in the Australian car hire market.

It all started when new replacement vehicles failed to arrive at agencies. Besides that, the recent school holidays have added to the demand. Those two factors combined with the problem that Holidaymakers are waiting until the last minute to book their car rental has caused the shortage.

Spokespersons from both Avis and Hertz are saying that the demand is totally unexpected.

“People have been making late bookings and it’s hard to plan your fleet this way. We are sold out this week and it is the end of the New South Wales school holidays too.” said Wayne Burgoyne of Hertz.

Similarly, Avis claims that the situation is just a 2-week glitch caused by the schools just letting out. A spokesman said that Avis believes that the demand will soon return to normal, but he admitted that they had reduced their fleet and that the new replacement cars failed to arrive on time.

It was reported that a staff member at Central Plaza Apartments had telephoned no less than eight separate car hire agencies and was unable to book a single car.
