Jamaicans lose complementary transit visas

As long as one can remember Jamaican citizens have been able to get a complimentary transit visa when traveling through the UK to onward destinations. That practice ended abruptly a few months ago.

The British High Commission (BHCJ) in Jamaica has ended the practice as a result of Jamaica’s failure to pass the new visa waiver regulations. Jamaica is the only country in all of the Caribbean not to do so. (more…)

London to finally get new Trains

London commuters have long complained about the deplorable conditions on London’s trains. That is about to change with the arrival a new £250 million fleet. London Overground lines just unveiled the first of the trains in Willesden. The new trains feature air conditioning, television, tube-style seating, and walkthrough carriages.

This is the first upgrade to trains on the network in 30 years and is welcomed by passengers who are fed up with the condition of the old trains. The existing trains are said to be unbearable in hot weather. (more…)

Earlier this week Air France-KLM cleaned up at the Airline Strategy Awards. The awards were held on July 12th in London and the airline received special honours in the Airline Business in the Environment category.

Air France-KLM received praise for its strategy, which focuses on environmental concerns when considering development. The group gained particular recognition for their participation in programmes to improve air traffic management and the compensation of CO2 emissions. (more…)

Alamo celebrates Johnny Depp Film Release

Johnny Depp’s latest film, Public Enemies, was just released in the UK and Alamo car rental is celebrating by highlighting the Midwest driving routes used in the movie. Drivers of Alamo rental cars will be able to follow in the footsteps of John Dillinger, as played by Depp, as they cruise the popular Midwest destinations featured in the film.

The film features several isolated towns and rural areas in the Midwestern United States. This part of the country was a hide-out for the gangsters of the 1930’s. (more…)

Europcar launches a new luxury car hire fleet

Europcar with its new “Prestige from Europcar” fleet is setting a new standard in luxury car rental in the UK. The recently launched fleet is comprised of some of the world’s most prestigious car brands such as Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, and Jaguar.  Until now, these brands have rarely been offered as hire cars.

The fleet is comprised of five vehicle categories, Executive, Luxury, Performance, Convertible, and 4×4.  (more…)

Zipcar launches London’s greenest car club

In a joint effort with Westminster City Council, Zipcar launched the UK’s first hybrid electric car club this week.  Zipcar is the largest car sharing operator in the world.  The London car club is starting with 20 hybrid vehicles in its fleet. The club offers environmentally friendly car rental to members on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Members will have a chance to enjoy driving the innovative all-electric Citroen C1, as well other hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prius and the Honda insight.  (more…)

Rental car thief caught on barricade

Earlier this week police were called to rescue a man who accidentally drove his car onto a concrete barricade and became stuck. However, when police Sgt. Ben Majetich arrived on the scene he discovered that the driver, Preston Kekumu Hernandez, 21, was in possession of a stolen car.

After doing a quick check, police Sgt. Ben Majetich was informed that the 2008 Suzuki XL7 that Hernandez was driving had been hired from Dollar Rent a Car in Tukwila on a one day lease. However, that was more than one month before and the car had since been reported stolen. (more…)

Car hire rises in the face of cash crisis

Good news for car hire companies; their trade continues to flourish while other aspects of the travel industry are battling to stay in business. Despite the fact that many people are still on a tight budget, recent surveys have shown that car hire is on the increase.

Group Marketing Manager Europcar Australia Ashley Jurberg seemed unsurprised by the results of the survey as he said he had noticed the trend, especially with those who live in the city. (more…)

Four major airlines still ignoring law on insurance

A report out recently by Which? Holiday a consumer magazine has revealed that four airlines are not following an EU ruling made last November that clearly states that airlines can no longer add extras on automatically for things like insurance.

Checks were made on 11 airlines based in Europe and when researchers used the airlines online booking system it showed that four of the airlines were still breaking the ruling. (more…)
